| Benicia’s Chris Bown captured both the Men’s A Singles and Doubles crowns at the 2003 WCRC Club Championships, held August 16-17 & 23-24 at the Walnut Creek Tennis Center. In winning his first WCRC singles title, Bown beat #2-seeded Mike Rizarri 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the semis and San Ramon’s Tony Lum 6-4, 7-5 in the final. He then teamed with newcomer Ron Hidayat to take the doubles crown with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rizarri and Thor Schreck. It was Bown’s third consecutive Men’s A Doubles title, having won it the previous two years with Mark Litzau as his partner.

Third-seeded Charles Kearney staged an improbable yet gutty comeback against Dave Berlier to win the Men’s B Singles championship. Down 2-5 in the final set, Kearney dug deep and did not concede another game, posting a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 victory. The tandem of Mike Druding and Craig Simmons won the Men’s B Doubles with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Dennis Goins and Francis Crusit.
Top seeded Ron Helgesson added a 2003 Men’s C Singles title to his already overloaded trophy case, straight-setting four opponents, including defending champion Philip Hensley in the final, 6-4, 6-3. Debashis Panda and Tony Kim upset Nat Bitton and Peter Hellman 6-1, 7-5 to win the Men’s C Doubles.

Chris Ramsower-Pearlstein easily retained her claim as the Women’s A Singles and Doubles champion for a fourth straight year. She dispatched #2 seeded Yumi Suzuki in the singles final 6-4, 6-1, then teamed with Kim Lackey to down Margo Garner and Marianne Dundon 6-0, 6-1. Top-seeded Shari Huber defeated Catherine Wang 6-3, 6-4 to win the Women’s B Singles and Sybil Schmidt went 2-0 in round robin play to capture the Women’s C Singles title. Laura Hooper and Kristen Ray won the Women’s C Doubles.
